Cancer Referral

It has been developed by Northamptonshire Sport in collaboration with the Macmillan Cancer Recovery Package, Public Health Northamptonshire and leisure providers who also support ‘Activity on Referral’.

There is lots of evidence that physical activity can help at all stages of the cancer pathway, from pre-treatment to during and after treatment. Being physically active helps to overcome cancer-related fatigue, anxiety and depression, while protecting the heart, lungs and bones. In some cases, being physically active has also been shown to slow the progression of cancer, improve survival and reduce the chance of cancer reoccurring.

Did you know?

  • Women who are physically active have a 20-30% lower risk of breast cancer
  • If you are physically active you have a 30-40% lower risk of developing cancer of the colon
  • In the UK, about 3.4% of all breast cancers and 5.3% of colon cancers are caused by inactivity

If you would like one to one support from an exercise professional you can be referred to the exercise referral programme directly by a healthcare professional involved in your care, e.g.: your hospital consultant, clinical nurse specialist or GP.

They will provide you with a copy of your treatment summary which you will need to take with you to your preferred site. If you have not given a treatment summary, a referral form will need to be completed by
your healthcare professional – available on request from:

All you do next is contact one of the three sites and make an appointment for your initial consultation.
